Autoimmune disease is prevalent in the general population and is the third most common type of disease in the United States after cancer and heart disease. Therefore, it is likely that an outpatient physical therapist will experience various patients that may have autoimmune disease as comorbidity. It is important that the physical therapist have an awareness of autoimmune disease due to the impact on patient prognosis, treatment, and outcomes. This lecture will provide a basic synopsis of autoimmune disease and physical therapy treatment considerations.  


Denise Schneider, PT, MPT, FAAOMPT, COMT, TPS, ATC  shares her knowledge and expertise on "Awareness of Comorbid Autoimmune Disease in Outpatient Physical Therapy".

  • Gain a basic understanding of autoimmune disease
  • Gain knowledge of the prevalence, signs and symptoms, and specific characteristics of the common autoimmune diseases

  • Gain an understanding of physical therapy treatment considerations in management of patients who have comorbid autoimmune disease 

About the Speaker(s):  

Denise Schneider, PT, MPT, FAAOMPT, COMT, TPS, ATC earned her Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Midwestern University in 2002 and has been working the outpatient orthopedic setting since then. Her ongoing commitment to excellence in clinical practice, commitment to professional development, and passion for providing optimal patient care led her to pursue further education and complete a certification in manual therapy (COMT) and a Fellowship in Clinical Diagnostics and Orthopedic Manual Therapy through the International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine-US.  Thereafter, Denise achieved a Therapeutic Pain Specialist Certification through the International Spine and Pain Institute.  Denise is dedicated to providing the utmost patient experience by incorporating evidence based practice and individualized care to include all aspects of one’s health and well being.
